Using recycled items in the garden can help reduce the overall cost of your garden. You can use several items around the house as flower pots; useless old tires can be cut into different designs with only a pair of snips and a little creativity; however it’s recommended that you use tires only for flowers, and not for fruits, and vegetables. Many different objects can be used as containers for plants, such as a broken wheel barrel, an empty bucket that contained harmless material, an antique bath tub, and many otherwise useless objects. Even old toys can be used as planters; although a toy dump truck as a planter is not recommended, one of the kids may end up taking your traumatized flowers for a ride around the yard.
There are several organic items that can be recycled into compost to help your garden grow good each season. Leaves, cut grass, fruit, and vegetable scraps, and even weeds can be used as nourishment to help you grow a healthy garden. Please do not use human excrement as compost; it contains e-coli, just in case you were thinking about it. Once the waste is collected simply put the organic material in a container. Be sure to cover the waste with a thick layer of dirt; this will help keep any plant matter from growing for lack of sun. Also be sure to keep the material damp and cover the container with a lid. The lid will help contain the heat and moisture, which will help break down the organic material inside the container. After a few months you’ll have a batch of homemade compost.
